Spirit Matter – detail

SPIRIT MATTER is a call for existential awareness: a meeting of the temporal physicality represented by the wolfhound, with the spiritual implications of a world running, with apparent inevitability, towards catastrophic change. The work embraces the wolfhounds ability to live fully in the moment. Angels, in their immortal-superreal state, remind of us of our history and our future. They are beautiful figments, backdrops only, to the act of existence. Time is framed as an eternity, as a single day, and a single moment, experienced simultaneously.

SPIRIT MATTER was conceived in 2019 as a surreal extension of my dystopian RatKind series. Throughout my career, each of my series has spilled fluidly into the next as a layer of meaning added on or pulled away. SPIRIT MATTER draws far back into a canon of companionship with my wolfhounds: their place in my life has been the rule rather than the exception.
