Plusieurs histoires se retrouvent au cœur d’un jardin. Les réalisations de millions d’années d’évolutions sur notre planète persistent à travers les succès cycliques de croissance, de détérioration d’adaptation. En ce moment critique de l’histoire humaine, ce récit change très rapidement. Dans les fables que nous, humains, nous sommes racontées—fables qui devaient guider notre chemin à travers le temps—nous avons célébré notre adaptation à cette planète, notre capacité à faire des compromis, et souvent, de surmonter ses exigences pour notre propre bénéfice.

Racontée dans l’environnement d’un jardin de tomates créé au cœur des Laurentides, The Patch Trilogy traverse les saisons, immergeant le public dans une installation vidéo à 360° créée au cours des 3 dernières années. Onze artistes de différents pays, ayant de 4 à 76 ans, de perspectives culturelles et sociales variées, ont entamé une expérience éco sociale pour réinventer la façon dont nous racontons notre histoire en créant des récits qui amorcent un dialogue au sujet du délicat équilibre entre mangeur et mangé, entre nature et culture.

En 2020, les nouvelles environnementales déprimantes et les algorithmes des médias sociaux font des ravages sur nos systèmes politiques et remettent en question nos fondements moraux. Alors qu’on nous initiait aux réalités de la chaîne d’approvisionnement en cas de pandémie, Bonnie Baxter réagit en plantant un jardin de tomates sur le terrain de sa maison à Val-David. Avec une poignée de semences, elle a créé à la fois une ressource alimentaire communautaire et, de manière fortuite, un site pour des performances allégoriques. Elle y a invité et filmé des artistes-conteurs et a ensuite tissé leurs fables ensembles. La superposition des diverses significations de ces récits compose un chœur surréaliste de commencements, de dénouements et de possibilités. Cet éloge cyclique à l’espoir, à la perte et au changement est l’essence même de The Patch Trilogy.

At the center of a garden lie many stories. The fruition of millions of years of evolution on our planet exists in the cyclical success of growth, decay and adaptation. At this critical point in human history, it is a story that is changing very quickly. In the fables we humans have told—those meant to guide our path through time—we have celebrated our adaptation to this planet, our ability to compromise with, and often, to overcome its demands for our own benefit.

Told from within the environment of a tomato patch created in the heart of the Laurentians, The Patch Trilogy moves through the seasons, immersing the audience in a 360° video installation created over the past 3 years. Eleven artists from different countries, from ages 4 to 76, from many cultural viewpoints and social orientations, begin an ecosocial experiment to re-imagine the way we tell the stories of ourselves: stories that initiate a dialogue on the delicately balanced relationship between eater and eaten, between wilderness and cultivation.

In 2020, climate news cast a pall of depression, social media manipulation wreaked havoc on our political systems and questioned our moral underpinnings. As we were initiated into pandemic supply-chain realities, Bonnie Baxter responded with a tomato garden she carved into the land of her Val-David home. With a handful of seeds, she created both a community food resource and, serendipitously, a stage for allegorical performance. She invited and filmed artist-storytellers and wove their fables together, layering their meanings to create a surreal chorus of beginnings, endings, and possibilities, a cyclical eulogy to hope, loss, and change that is The Patch Trilogy.

Le Philosophe et la Tomate

EMPORIA est un projet virtuel mené en 2020 par le MAC LAU en collaboration avec Xavier Brouillette, professeur de philosophie au Cégep du Vieux Montréal, et les artistes Bonnie Baxter, Stanley Février, Philippe Hamelin, Kim Kielhofner et Sophie Latouche. Alors que l’ensemble des activités humaines étaient contraintes à une forme d’isolement, que les salles de classe et d’exposition étaient fermées, ces collaborateurs ont imaginé une série de productions vidéographiques et numériques où la philosophie prend la parole à travers l’art. Ces vidéos ont été acheminées aux étudiant.e.s chaque semaine en guise de cours virtuel.

EMPORIA is a virtual project that was initiated in 2020 by the MAC LAU in collaboration with Xavier Brouillette, philosophy professor at Cégep du Vieux Montréal, and artists Bonnie Baxter, Stanley Juillet, Philippe Hamelin, Kim Kielhofner and Sophie Latouche. During the period of pandemic isolation, while classrooms and exhibition halls were closed, these collaborators imagined a series of video-graphic and digital productions where philosophy speaks through art. These videos were sent to students every week as a virtual lesson.
