« La gravure, cet art du multiple, nécessite un travail méticuleux, aux variables multiples. L’humidité du papier, la viscosité de l’encre, la pression de la presse agissent sur le résultat final de chaque œuvre. Comme les bêtes sauvages, les artistes graveurs doivent apprivoiser chaque variable.
Jean Paul Riopelle est un artiste peintre, sculpteur et graveur. Le motif animalier est un sujet présent dans son art. Les représentations de l’oie blanche, du hibou, des gibiers, des animaux domestiques et de la ferme sont présentes sous de multiples formes. L’artiste crée une frénésie dans un cafouillis de plumes. Il porte sur son bestiaire un regard attentif. Il observe les comportements animaliers. Source inépuisable d’inventivité, le bestiaire permet d’étonnantes associations et mouvements. La ligne devient forme et l’animal prend vie. Toujours soucieux de la durabilité et de la qualité des matériaux qu’il employait.
Bonnie Baxter est une artiste interdisciplinaire réputée. Dans ses œuvres gravées, sculptées et numériques de la série Ratkind, l’artiste met en scène le personnage du Rat, cet animal qui éveille des sentiments de dégout, de peur, de haine provoquant méfiance et violence. Ses personnages hybrides – des humains à têtes de Rats – vivent ensemble en toute sécurité. L’artiste invite à une réflexion sur la peur et la haine de l’Autre différent. Elle exhorte à l’empathie, à l’ouverture d’esprit et à l’intégration des cultures, des identités, des genres et des langues, afin de construire un monde tolérant. S’apprivoiser les unes les autres est la clé de lecture de Ratkind. En 1982, Bonnie Baxter a fondé son studio d’art imprimé, l’Atelier du Scarabée, au Québec. De 1985 à 1993, elle a assumé les responsabilités de maître graveure de toutes les eaux-fortes de Jean Paul Riopelle. Ensemble, ils ont développé des stratégies de création. Ils ont maîtrisé les variables de la gravure. Ensemble, ils ont apprivoisé la bête. »

“Print-making, that art of the multiple, requires meticulous work, with multiple variables. The humidity of the paper, the viscosity of the ink and the pressure of the press have an effect on the final result of each work. Printmakers must tame each variable like wild beasts.
Jean Paul Riopelle was a painter, sculptor and printmaker. Animal motifs are a subject found in his art. Representations of white geese, owls, game and domestic and farm animals can be seen in various forms in his work. He creates frenzy in a confusion of feathers. He paid close attention to his bestiary, observing animal behaviour. An inexhaustible source of invention, fauna make astonishing associations and movements possible. Lines become form and animals come to life. He was always concerned with the durability and the quality of the materials he used.
Bonnie Baxter is an acclaimed interdisciplinary artist. The prints, sculptures and digital works in her series Ratkind depict the figure of the Rat, that animal which arouses feelings of disgust, fear and hatred, giving rise to wariness and violence. Her hybrid characters – humans with Rat heads – live together in complete safety. Baxter invites us to reflect on fear and hatred of the Other’s difference. She urges empathy, an open mind and the integration of cultures, identities, genders and languages in order to build a tolerant world. Each winning the other over is the key to reading Ratkind.
Bonnie Baxter founded her print art studio, the Atelier du Scarabée, in Quebec in 1982. For ten years, from 1984 to 1994, she was the master printmaker of all the engravings by Jean Paul Riopelle. Together, they developed creative strategies and mastered the variables of printmaking. Together, they tamed the beast.”
